Passion for collecting and tradition

Linked to Christmas in their symbolism for centuries, nativity scenes in a variety of forms continue to be very popular. A Christmas nativity scene, and in particular the nativity figures, often establish their own family tradition and are selected and expanded with great care, with hardly any limits to the variety and creativity. While in the middle of the 20th century a nativity scene with nativity figures was still an almost priceless treasure that was often given away at weddings, the production methods, while maintaining traditions and the wood-carved models, all of which came from the imagination of the sculptors, have always been the same in Val Gardena further developed and perfected.

What makes these wood-carved depictions so special? Is it the artistry that went into each individual carving, the liturgical meaning of the depictions or the personal history and the first childhood memories of Christmas and the family nativity scene under the Christmas tree. Everyone has their own personal connection to their Christmas nativity scene and to each nativity scene figure and we are happy to be able to tell every story with our figures.

Choosing the right nativity figures

Choosing from the variety of styles and designs can be difficult at first, as you usually only buy a nativity scene once in your life. It is often advisable to recall the memories of the parents or grandparents at the crèche or to find a completely new style of your own, perhaps based on the furnishings of the apartment or house.

The designs of the baroque, modern and stylized nativity figures are also described in more detail in the following blog posts. Of course, our team at Val Gardena wood carving is always happy to provide you with advice.

The manger stable

Self-built nativity stables are often given away or inherited and now suitable figures should move into this stable. It is advisable to measure appropriate reference points such as doors or the height of the interior and adapt the Saint Joseph of the respective nativity series to them, which should always be a few centimeters smaller than the respective reference height.

Stylistically there is also the Nativity stables different types of production, from alpine to oriental to modern & stylized, so that a suitable home can be found for every style of figure.

In addition, it is important to always measure the maximum area intended for the nativity scene (e.g. the surface of a chest of drawers) and compare it with the nativity scene stables, as these are available in a wide variety of sizes.
