June 15 – St. Vitus (Veit): Young martyr with great impact
On June 15, the Church commemorates St. Vitus (Latin: Vitus, German: Veit) – one of the 14 Holy Helpers in Need and one of the most famous early Christian martyrs. He is said to have been born to pagan parents in Sicily in the 4th century. As a child, he converted to Christianity and performed numerous miracles. Under Emperor Diocletian, he was tortured and ultimately executed for his faith.
St. Vitus is deeply rooted, especially in German-speaking countries. In the Middle Ages, the veneration of St. Vitus was widespread – for example, in St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague. He is considered the patron saint against epilepsy, nervous disorders, and for healthy vitality . Dancers also invoke him, which led to the phrase "St. Vitus Dance."
