June 16 – St. Benno of Meissen: Missionary and Patron of Bavaria

On June 16, the Catholic Church honors St. Benno of Meissen , a German bishop and folk saint from the 11th century. He was born around 1010 and served as Bishop of Meissen from 1066. Amidst political unrest—including that between Emperor Henry IV and Pope Gregory VII—Benno always stood firm in his faith and remained faithful to his office and the Church. He was a pastor, a promoter of monastic life, and a patient teacher. After his death in 1106, his veneration spread rapidly, especially in Bavaria, where he was canonized in 1523. Today he is the patron saint of the Diocese of Dresden-Meissen and the state of Bavaria .

He is usually depicted with a fish or a key – symbols of his legend and official dignity.
