May 22 – St. Rita of Cascia: Patroness of hopeless causes
On May 22nd, the Catholic Church commemorates Saint Rita of Cascia, one of the most well-known saints for hopeless causes. Born in 1381 in Roccaporena, Italy, Rita led a life of devotion and faith. After the early death of her abusive husband and two sons, she entered the Augustinian convent in Cascia in 1407, where she lived a life of strict renunciation and penance. She later received the wounds of the crown of thorns as stigmata.

Rita is often depicted with a crucifix, a rose, or a crown of thorns—symbols of her deep faith and suffering. Her incorrupt body rests in the Basilica di Santa Rita in Cascia, which remains an important place of pilgrimage to this day.
