June 27: Memorial Day of Saint Hemma of Gurk
On June 27, the church commemorates an impressive woman of faith: Hemma von Gurk.
Born around the year 1000, she came from Austrian nobility and dedicated her life to the Church. In Carinthia, she founded a convent in Gurk, a spiritual center that continues to exert a powerful influence today. Her commitment to caring for the poor and pastoral care made her the patron saint of the region. For centuries, her death anniversary was celebrated, and her canonization was officially confirmed by Pope Pius XI in 1938.
In the performing arts, Hemma often appears as a venerable woman with typical attributes: a double-towered church as a symbol of her monastery foundation, with a certificate for her patronages and with a rose as a sign of her gentleness .
In the sacred wood carvings from the Val Gardena, they could be depicted in a dignified carved posture, standing, with a graceful gaze, in muted, warm colors that reflect their spiritual power and regional significance.
