June 1 – St. Justin Martyr: Philosopher and Defender of the Faith
On June 1, the Church commemorates St. Justin , one of the first great Christian philosophers and apologists. Born around the year 100 in Flavia Neapolis (present-day Nablus), he searched long for the truth and finally found it in Christianity. Justin saw no contradiction between reason and faith, but rather a profound connection.
He defended Christianity with his famous apologies to the Roman authorities and is considered a pioneer of Christian philosophy. Because of his courageous confession, he was executed in Rome under Emperor Marcus Aurelius around 165 AD.
Justin is the patron saint of philosophers and is considered a bridge between ancient philosophy and Christian thought.
