June 8 – St. Medardus of Noyon: Patron against rain and bad weather
On June 8, the church commemorates St. Medard , one of the most popular saints of the early Middle Ages in northern France. Born around 470 in Picardy, he was known for his kindness, justice, and concern for the poor and peasants. Medard became Bishop of Noyon and was particularly popular in rural areas.
Popular belief attributes a strong influence on the weather to him – an old farmer's saying goes: "Whatever the weather is like on Medardus Day, so it will stay for four weeks after." Therefore, to this day he is considered a patron against rain, storms and crop failure .
Depictions often show him with an umbrella – a symbol of his protection.
