June 9 – St. Ephrem the Syrian: Poet, theologian and doctor of the Church
On June 9, the Church commemorates St. Ephrem the Syrian , one of the most important theologians and poets of early Christianity. Born around 306 in Nisibis (present-day Turkey), he lived during a time of political and religious upheaval and dedicated his life to serving the Church—as a teacher, preacher, and, above all, as a theological poet .
He composed over 400 hymns distinguished by their poetic depth, dogmatic clarity, and spiritual power. As a deacon, he lived a life of asceticism and humility—a model of Syrian spirituality. In 1920, he was elevated to Doctor of the Church by Pope Benedict XV.
Ephrem is considered the patron saint of teachers, poets and spiritual singers.
