The Name Day of Saint Gertrude – A Festival of Hope and Blessing

Saint Gertrude of Nivelles is a significant figure of the Middle Ages and one of the most famous Benedictine saints. Born in 626 as the daughter of the Frankish mayor of the palace, Pepin the Elder, she consciously chose the spiritual path and became abbess of the monastery in Nivelles, founded by her mother. There she dedicated her life to piety, education, and helping the poor and travelers.

Gertrude is particularly venerated as the patron saint of travelers, gardeners, and those who fight against mouse plagues. Her life was characterized by charity and a deep spiritual connection to God. Many depictions show her holding a church model, symbolizing her monastery construction, or with mice, alluding to her role as a helper in times of need.

Even today, she is venerated, especially in Belgium and Germany. Numerous churches and chapels bear her name, and many people ask for her protection. Her feast day on March 17 is celebrated by believers with special services and prayers.
