Marian Apparitions of Fatima: Faith and Message

The apparitions of Fatima are among the most famous modern sites of Mary's apparitions. Between May and October 1917, Our Lady repeatedly encountered three children, Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta, in Fatima, Portugal. She conveyed messages of prayer, conversion, and peace. Particularly well-known are the apparitions on the 13th of the months from May to October, with the climax being the last, October 13, when the "Lady of Fatima" visibly appeared enveloped in light.

These events had a profound spiritual impact. Millions of pilgrims continue to visit Fatima to offer intercession, pray the Rosary, and spread the message of reconciliation. Fatima is considered a sign of hope in times of division and conflict.

In sacred art, Our Lady of Fatima is often depicted as a graceful figure with a rosary and bright clothing, her gaze full of compassion, sometimes surrounded by a halo of light. Val Gardena woodcarving takes up these motifs, resulting in amiable, meditative Madonna figures in which faith and craftsmanship are harmonious.
