From tree trunk to work of art: How wood carvings are created
The quality of a wood carving depends largely on the correct selection of wood. Each type of wood has its own specific properties that make it suitable for different works of art. But before a raw piece is transformed into a delicate work of art, the wood undergoes a fascinating processing process.

Choosing the right wood
Linden, maple, or Swiss stone pine are commonly used for wood carvings. These woods are particularly popular due to their fine grain and ease of workability. Linden, for example, is often used for detailed figures such as nativity scenes because it is very easy to carve and lends itself perfectly to painting. Maple, on the other hand, is harder and suitable for durable objects such as crosses .
Proper drying of wood
Before the wood can be worked, it must be completely dried. This process can take several years, as slow drying is necessary to avoid cracks and deformation. Only then can a blank be created that meets the high standards of handcrafted carving.
From design to finished work
After selecting the wood, a design is created that defines the shape and details of the future work of art. Modern techniques such as modeling and sketching meet traditional craftsmanship. The wood is roughly cut before the fine work begins—a phase where true artistry comes to the fore. The depictions are then either carved entirely by hand as unique pieces or pre-cut in various sizes using fine copy routers.

Details and painting
After carving, finishing and painting follow. Many of our figures, such as the Mary figures , are hand-painted, making each piece unique. We use environmentally friendly paints and varnishes to enhance both the beauty and durability of the wooden sculpture. Depending on the style, watercolors, wax, and wood stain are also used.
A combination of nature and art
The choice of wood is not only a technical but also an artistic decision. Every grain, every nuance tells a story and contributes to the uniqueness of the figure. It is precisely this combination of nature and art that makes our works from the Val Gardena so special.
