Tradition and passion: The history of the Grossrubatscher brothers’ wood carving workshop in Val Gardena
Val Gardena woodcarving is a centuries-old art form, deeply rooted in the history of the Val Gardena valley. As early as the beginning of the 19th century, Janmatie Moroder and his brother were trading in Val Gardena woodcarvings. In the 1980s, Raimund Grossrubatscher, the uncle of the Beniamino and Camillo Grossrubatscher brothers, began building a Val Gardena woodcarving workshop in Ortisei.

Ten years ago, inspired by his uncle Raimund, Beniamino Grossrubatscher and his brother Camillo Grossrubatscher, the current managing director, began expanding the trade in original Val Gardena wood carving products. Their goal was to bring the centuries-old tradition of wood carving into the digital world and make it accessible to a global audience with one vision: Living Tradition.
A tradition with history
The Val Gardena valley in South Tyrol has been known for its artistic wood carving for centuries. As early as the 17th century, locals began using wood carving as a source of income. Masterpieces such as artfully crafted nativity figures, sacred statues, and decorative elements soon made the region famous far beyond its borders.
The Grossrubatscher family proudly continues this tradition. Their online shop, Grödner Holzschnitzerei (Grödner Woodcarving), offers carved nativity figures, statues of saints, angels, putti, crosses, and much more. Quality, sustainability, and attention to detail are paramount.
